We Asked 3 Bartenders to Name the Best Gin for a Negroni, and They All Said the Same Thing
On the other hand, Jason Hedges, director of beverage at Laurent Tourondel Hospitality, leans toward a traditional London Dry gin. “They have a traditional juniper-forward profile that pairs exceptionally well with the bitter notes of Campari and sweetness of vermouth,” he notes.
One of Harlem’s legendary cocktail haunts 67 Orange Street is taking over Back Bar
But luckily, the bar won’t be down and out for too long. According to owner Karl Franz Williams, 67 Orange has found a new home in Harlem. To prepare for the new location, the bar started a fundraiser to help aid with design, build out and provide financial support for the team. But if you just can’t wait for the new doors to open, you can get a taste of this Harlem speakeasy this month.
NoMad Is NYC’s Hottest Cocktail Neighborhood — Drinkers Just Don’t Know It Yet
Not enough? The Eventi Hotel’s Back Bar, located at the corner of West 30th Street and Sixth Avenue, is currently hosting an extended revival of Blacktail, the Cuban-themed cocktail bar from the Dead Rabbit team that used to sit at the southern tip of Manhattan.
Reviving Blacktail NYC: A Journey Back to 1933 Havana at Back Bar
The revival of Blacktail, the beloved sister-bar to The Dead Rabbit (World’s Best Bar, 2015) at Back Bar, stemmed from a connection between Will Pasternak, Head Bartender, and Chris Lauber, Senior Director of Operations for Laurent Tourondel Hospitality.
Despite the smaller space at Back Bar, the design and atmosphere of the original Blacktail were meticulously recreated with dark wood, plants, wicker chairs, and original artwork. Back Bar distinguishes itself with unique experiences, high-quality drinks, and collaborations. The “Visiting Luminary Series,” including Blacktail’s revival, features renowned bars and bartenders providing exclusive and diverse drinking experiences that attract cocktail enthusiasts and create a dynamic bar scene in NYC.
THE CITY’S BEST AFTER-WORK BAR IS BACK
It’s easy to overlook the need for quality in a bar for post-work drinks. It’s been a long day, and the ease (and the beer-and-shot specials) of a dive is right there. A great cocktail bar, though, does a much better job of setting the tone for the rest of the night — just think of how, pre-pandemic, when we were all cooped up like chickens for five days a week, having a 5:07 p.m. negroni at an establishment that really cared felt special. In the Financial District, that bar was Blacktail. The Cuban-inspired cocktail spot — from the team behind The Dead Rabbit, another legendary FiDi watering hole — closed four years ago, but on May 1, it returned as a pop-up at Back Bar in the Kimpton Hotel Eventi.
The Resy Guide to Outdoor Dining in New York
Hotel Eventi’s Back Bar has a patio perfect for people watching. Sip your Yuzu 75 or your Desert Paloma while you indulge in their burger and a healthy serving of housemade gelato or sorbet. If they have it, the pistachio-orange marmalade is worth the brain freeze 10 times over.
Back Bar’s Luminary Series: Joaquín Simó
Nestled behind the Hotel Eventi lobby, Back Bar, known for its craft cocktail program and elegant ambiance, is proud to present its “Visiting Bar Luminary Series,” a curated calendar of events featuring some of the brightest minds on the global cocktail scene. This series prominently highlights the distinctive styles and characteristics of bartenders, positioning them at the forefront.
Joaquín originally traveled far from his native home in Ecuador in his search for the perfect daiquiri. Raised amongst Cuban family in Miami, he grew up eating fruits and vegetables fresh from his grandfather's farm and helping his father at his French bakery. His epicurean roots firmly established, he sought out new seasons in New England, graduating from Boston University with a degree in English and religion. He began tending bar in crowded college dives, raucous rock n' roll bars, neighborhood restaurants and trendy hot spots, all the while furthering his education on food, spirits, flavor combinations and balance.
What’s Behind Increasingly Insane Cocktail Prices These Days?
Annoyed that the industry standard has become a $20 and up cocktail, I went to test out the “Inflation Proof” offerings at Kimpton Eventi’s Back Bar. The menu of all $12 cocktails was put together by Jason Hedges of LT Hospitality.

Yes, You Can Still Get a Great $12 Cocktail
Back Bar is an intimate space that can open up during the summer to include outdoor imbibing, and there’s a secret bar in the back behind a bookcase that’s ideal for private events, guest bartender nights and cocktail classes. The bar offers music a few times a week and appears to get a nice mix of locals, curious drinkers and hotel guests, though the vibe feels more like a bar that just happens to be located on a hotel property than a “hotel bar.”
